We have been travelling around New Zealand for 9 days now and pretty much have made the whirlwind tour of the south island. We left Abel Tasman and headed down the west coast through small towns here and there but mostly followed a narrow road through endless green. It was gorgeous and felt like we were in a different time. We stopped at the Franz Josef glacier for a quick walk to a view point. Then it was off again to stay in a small town of Haast. We pondered tent camping but opted to stay in the daughters room of a hostel owner as the hostel was full. What a good choice since it rained all night!!!
The next morning we were off again, leaving the sand flies and coast behind for Queenstown. Oh the town of adventure!!! We rode the gondola up for some beautiful views and spent some much needed time walking around town and relaxing.
Once again it was up early and back in the car to Milford Sound. It is says you should only go if it is raining and boy did we pick the right day. Pouring buckets or a monsoon is more like it. But it turned that place into the land of a thousand waterfulls. It was one of the best things on the trip so far. It felt like you were in a fairy tale. Who knew there was a place like this?? We stayed in Queenstown another night and then off to Mt. Cook.
Yesterday we made it to Mt. Cook National Park. The weather is not great so mountain tops are hard to see but it is a beautiful place all the same.
Today is more Mt. Cook hiking and then back to Christchurch for our flight to Sydney tomorrow!! Wow, that was a lot of the time in the car but boy was it worth it. Such a great trip so far!

ReplyDeleteSo glad you are still writing about New Zealand. Did you know I had a lady I knew in New Aealand. I never was able to meet her but did correspond for about 40 years and did hae a telephone call from her when she came to America. Really looking forward to more pictures.
